Concentration 1-Telling Time: Third Grade TIU Enrichment

Lesson Plan

Concentration 1-Telling Time: Third Grade TIU Enrichment

Grade Levels

2nd Grade, 3rd Grade

Course, Subject

Mathematics
  • Big Ideas
Measurement attributes can be quantified, and estimated using customary and non-customary units of measure.
Numerical quantities, calculations, and measurements can be estimated or analyzed by using appropriate strategies and tools.
  • Concepts
    Time
  • Competencies
    Calculate time intervals.
    Make estimations.
    Solve problems.
Tell and write time to nearest minute.

Rationale

This purpose of this lesson is to provide enrichment for students who have an initial knowledge and background in telling time to the minute on both a digital and analog clock.

Vocabulary

Digital Clock: a clock or watch that shows the time using numbers, not hands

Analog Clock: a clock that displays the time using the position of hands on a dial

Objectives

  • The students will correctly and write the time on both an analog and digital clock.

Lesson Essential Question(s)

How precise do measurements and calculations need to be?
What does it mean to estimate or analyze numerical quantities?
When is it is appropriate to estimate versus calculate?
  1. Why is telling time important?
  2. How can I tell time using both digital and analog clock faces?

Duration

This lesson will take approximately one 40 minute periods.

Materials

  • Concentration Cards (These should be copied so that students get the number of clocks teacher deems necessary for practice.  Teacher should copy one extra per student for the formal assessment at the end of the lesson.)
  • Large Clock for Teacher Modeling
  • Pencil

Suggested Instructional Strategies

Webb’s Depth of Knowledge:  Skill/Concept, Strategic Thinking, Extended Thinking

W: WHERE/WHY/WHAT

W: This lesson is most appropriate for students who have initial knowledge in telling time to the minute and are in need of enrichment of the skill.

H: HOOK

This lesson will provide students with enrichment in telling time to the minute. The lesson will allow the students to practice the skill using a hands-on tactile learning activity. It will allow both students who need manipulatives and students needing an auditory lesson, a chance to excel.

E: EXPLORE/EXPERIENCE/EQUIP

Students will be using real-life scenarios to correctly write times on digital and analog clocks.  Students will be creating their own set of clocks.

R: RETHINK/REHEARSE/REVISE/REFINE

Students will be working independently to write times on both digital and analog clocks.  Teacher will be closely monitoring the class checking for errors as the students write the given time.  Student will be permitted to change the times on the clocks for accuracy.

E: EVALUATE

Students will be informally assessed during activity via teacher observation.  Students will be formally assessed via the worksheet after activity completion.

T: TAILORED

This lesson is tailored to a third grade student who has acquired basic knowledge of telling time to the minute on both digital and analog clocks.

O: ORGANIZED

Activity is review/enrichment lesson.  The lesson is organized into introduction, guided instruction, modeling, independent work and assessment.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Teacher will hold up large clock.  Teacher will set clock to a time and ask students to peer share the time on the clock.  Teacher will then ask for a volunteer to tell the class the time.  Teacher will do this with clock a few different times as a review.
  2. Teacher will pass out clock cards.  Teacher will then tell the students that they will be having the opportunity to create their own clocks.
  3. Teacher will read the example scenarios. (Teacher can add more or delete more depending on intended skill level.)
  4. Students will write the times on the analog and digital clocks.  Teacher will carefully monitor students and provide feedback.  Students will change any incorrect times.
  5. After students have written each time on clocks, teacher will share correct analog time on large clock and each digital clock on board.
  6. Teacher will then pass out one additional clock card page.  Teacher will read four scenarios.  Students will then be formally assessed on the times written on the analog and digital clocks.
  7. (OPTIONAL:  CONCENTRATION LESSON TWO)  If Concentration Lesson Two will be completed on another day, teacher will have students keep practice cards.
